International Partner Organizations

Joint Usage/Research Center for Interdisciplinary Large-scale Information Infrastructure (JHPCN)

JHPCN is a consortium of eight university supercomputing centers established in Japan in 2010. 

It focuses on providing computing resources for simulation, data analytics, and AI. It also conducts joint research projects on software, methods, and operational issues such as energy efficiency. 

Some NHR centers participate in such projects as international partners.

Digital Research Alliance of Canada (The Alliance)

The Alliance provides a modern and sustainable digital ecosystem for researchers in Canada. 

More than 100 mostly academic partners are involved. 

In addition to operating HPC/AI resources, The Alliance's services also include research data management (FDM), research software development (RSE), and training. 

The NHR network sees great potential for close exchange and long-term cooperation, particularly in fields that go beyond traditional HPC, such as FDM and RSE, but also in the area of cyber security.

MésoNET - Le Mésocentre des Mésocentres

MesoNET aims to meet the needs of academic and industrial researchers by developing foundational digital infrastructure. 

The main goal is to strengthen the organization of national and regional offerings in numerical simulation, high-performance computing (HPC), combined with methods of'artificial intelligence (AI), as well as providing access to quantum logic modeling (QLM) and training in quantum computing. 

The infrastructure, integrated into the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) initiative, is expected to have a significant impact on researchers’ adoption of national and regional public digital and AI infrastructures.

Young Researcher Exchange Program

Strengthening International Collaboration in HPC

In addition to scientific and technical exchange, the network especially promotes personal collaboration. Through the NHR Young Researcher Exchange Program, researchers and early-career staff from NHR centers can further their education through stays at international partner institutions.

In summer 2025, Marcel Krüger and Dr. Tim Gerrits from NHR4CES in Aachen joined Professor Takashi Shimokawabe’s laboratory at the University of Tokyo. Supported by the program, they spent three months in Japan to strengthen international partnerships and advance visualization methods for HPC-based simulations together with Japan’s JHPCN network.

Their research focused on advanced visualization techniques for GPU-based fluid dynamics simulations, especially in-situ processing methods that allow simulation data to be analyzed while it is still being generated. These approaches reduce storage demands and enable faster scientific insights.

During their stay, the researchers explored future collaborations, gave invited lectures, and learned about Japan’s HPC infrastructure, including the Miyabi supercomputer. Following the successful exchange, a continuation project has been approved by JHPCN, and the partners are now preparing joint publications and conference submissions to further expand the collaboration between NHR and JHPCN.

Joint Training Program

Together with its international cooperation partners, the NHR offers joint training courses on various HPC-related topics such as security and energy efficiency.

Events

Once a year, the NHR and its international cooperation partners hold a workshop on important topics that concern all HPC alliances. The aim is to exchange information about country-specific characteristics and commonalities and to learn best practices from each other
